I AM Who I AM

Exodus 3:14

Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com

Scripture
God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel: 'I AM has sent me to you.'"
Author & Audience

Moses is on holy ground at a burning bush, asking the question every theologian has asked since: "What is your name?" The Egyptian gods all had names that explained them — Ra was the sun, Hapi was the Nile, Anubis was death. The God of Abraham refuses that grammar. His name is not a description; it is an existence claim. He simply is.

Word Study

ὁ Ὤν

ho On · Greek (LXX)

“the One Who Is, the Existing One”

The Hebrew is ehyeh asher ehyeh — "I will be what I will be." The LXX renders it with the Greek participle of einai, "to be." Both translations agree on the point: this God's existence is not derived. He is not a being among beings. He is Being itself, and everything else is contingent on him.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

William Lane Craig

philosopher and theologian, defender of the Kalam Cosmological Argument

“Whatever begins to exist has a cause. The universe began to exist. Therefore the universe has a cause — and only one kind of being is uncaused.” — the Kalam argument, summarized across Reasonable Faith

Craig has spent his career arguing that God is the only kind of thing that doesn't need an explanation outside itself. Everything else has a beginning, a cause, a borrowed existence. Exodus 3:14 is the verse where God names himself in exactly those terms: I AM. Not I was caused. Not I depend. I AM.

If you live as if your existence were self-explanatory, this verse is corrective. Your morning is given. Your next breath is given. Even your ability to wonder about God is given by the only Being whose existence is not given. Stand in that for a minute before the day starts.

Continue your study: Apostles' Creed — "I believe in God" is short for "I believe in the I AM." Every line of the creed presupposes Exodus 3:14.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, I AM, you are not a god among gods. You are the ground of every being that is. Save me today from imagining that anything I depend on is more solid than you. In Jesus' name — the Word who shares your name — Amen.
