Brennan Manning on the scandalous initiative of God — love that did not wait for our improvement but moved decisively toward us in our worst condition.
ἀσθενῶν
asthenōn · Greek NT“weak, powerless, without strength”
Paul stacks three descriptions of humanity before God's intervention: weak (asthenōn), ungodly (asebōn), and sinners (hamartōlōn). Each term escalates the hopelessness of our condition. The timing — 'at the right time' (kata kairon) — signals that God did not act randomly but precisely when we were least deserving and most in need.
Manning's whole ministry was built on this verse. He watched people — himself included — exhaust themselves trying to become worthy of God's love, only to discover that love was never conditioned on worthiness. Christ died for the ungodly. Not the nearly-good, not the sincerely trying, but the ungodly. This is the foundation that makes the gospel genuinely good news rather than an impossible standard.
Paul's point is not merely historical — it is present and personal. The same God who loved you while you were still a sinner loves you now, with all your ongoing failures and half-formed obedience. You do not need to clean up before drawing near. The cross was God's definitive statement about where you stand with Him. Let that truth settle into your bones today.
