A Spirit of Power, Love, Self-Control
2 Timothy 1:7
Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com
Paul writes his final letter — likely from a Roman prison cell shortly before his execution — to his young protégé Timothy, who Paul senses is faltering under pressure. The encouragement is not advice but a reminder of what has already been given.
σωφρονισμοῦ
sōphronismou · Greek NT“sound mind, self-discipline, self-control, sobriety”
From sōphrōn (sound-minded, self-controlled). The word describes the mental balance and disciplined judgment that comes from having a mind properly calibrated to reality. It is neither timidity (which Paul is correcting) nor recklessness. The three gifts — power (dunamis), love (agapē), self-discipline (sōphronismos) — form a complete spiritual character: strength, warmth, and wisdom.
Lewis understood that fear — specifically cowardice about truth and conviction — is the enemy of every other virtue. When you are afraid, you cannot love freely, you cannot think clearly, you cannot act powerfully. Paul's list in 2 Timothy 1:7 is the antidote to fear: power (the ability to act despite opposition), love (the willingness to give despite risk), and self-control (the clarity to choose well under pressure). These are not aspirations; Paul says God has given them.
The key word is 'gave' (edōken) — aorist, completed action. God gave this spirit. It is already deposited in the believer through the Holy Spirit. Timothy does not need to generate power, love, or self-control; he needs to stop suppressing what he has already received. Fear chokes what grace has planted. What fear in your life is currently suppressing the power, love, or self-control God has already given you?
