Carmen Joy Imes — Old Testament scholar and author of Bearing God’s Name, whose work on Exodus and priestly identity illuminates what it means to belong to God.
βασίλειον ἱεράτευμα
basileion hierateuma · Greek NT (from LXX Exodus 19:6)“royal priesthood”
Peter quotes directly from Exodus 19:6 LXX—God’s original covenant identity for Israel now extended to the new covenant community. The church is not merely religious; it is royally priestly, set apart to represent God and mediate His presence to the world.
Peter reaches back to Sinai to describe who believers are. The identity God offered Israel at the mountain—chosen, royal, priestly, holy, possessed—now belongs to all who are in Christ. This is not merely honorific language. It is a commission: proclaim the excellencies of the One who called you from darkness.
Imes points out that bearing God’s name means representing Him faithfully in every sphere of life. You are a walking proclamation. How does your Monday morning—your workplace, your home, your conversation—reflect the marvelous light you were called into? The priesthood is not confined to Sunday.
