Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com

Scripture
2 John 1:5–6 (Greek NT / ESV) καὶ νῦν ἐρωτῶ σε, κυρία, οὐχ ὡς ἐντολὴν γράφων σοι καινήν, ἀλλὰ ἣν εἴχαμεν ἀπ' ἀρχῆς, ἵνα ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.
Author & Audience

Mother Teresa of Calcutta — Missionaries of Charity founder and Nobel Peace laureate, whose daily walk among the poorest embodied love as commandment-keeping rather than sentiment.

Word Study

περιπατῶμεν

peripatŏmen · Greek NT

“we walk / we live our daily life”

peripateo (to walk around) is John's recurring metaphor for ongoing daily conduct. Love is not defined here as a feeling but as a walk—a sustained pattern of life that moves in the direction of God's commandments. Love is observable, measurable, directional.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Mother Teresa

Missionaries of Charity; Calcutta, 1910–1997

“Not all of us can do great things, but small things with great love.” — A Simple Path

John resists novelty. This is not a fresh command but the original one—love one another as you have heard from the beginning. And then he defines love with surprising concreteness: love is walking in God's commandments. Love is not an additional requirement beyond obedience—it is the shape obedience takes when it is alive.

Mother Teresa understood that love is performed in specific, small, unremarkable acts done with enormous intent. The elderly person served, the overlooked child noticed, the inconvenient person not turned away—these are not extras added to love but love itself in motion. What small act today can you walk in with great love?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Lord, help me love not as sentiment but as a daily walk—obedient, consistent, directed toward You and toward others. Make my small acts today full of great love. Amen.
