This Mystery Is Profound
Ephesians 5:31–32

Nancy Pearcey — professor at Houston Christian University and author of Love Thy Body, whose work on the theology of sexuality shows how marriage's design reflects ultimate realities rather than social constructs.
μυστήριον
mustērion · Greek NT“mystery / sacred secret”
mustērion in Paul's usage is not something incomprehensible but a divine reality previously hidden that has now been revealed. Marriage's 'mystery' is that it was always a sign pointing beyond itself—to the union of Christ and the church. The earthly covenant is a living sermon about a heavenly reality.
Paul quotes Genesis 2:24 and then says: this is about Christ and the church. Marriage, from its very beginning, was designed to be a living parable—a visible, embodied sign of the invisible union between the Bridegroom and His bride. Every faithful marriage preaches a sermon.
Pearcey argues that the current cultural confusion about marriage and sexuality is ultimately confusion about the gospel—because the sign is being severed from its referent. Whether you are married or single, you participate in this mystery: the church is the bride, and Christ is the groom, and the wedding feast is coming. That is the reality behind every human longing for union.
