Word Study

τερπνότητα

terpnotēta · Greek LXX

“beauty / delight / pleasantness”

terpnos means delightful, pleasing, giving pleasure. The LXX uses it to render the Hebrew no'am (pleasantness, beauty). David reduces all his desires to one: to gaze on the delightfulness of God—to be absorbed in the beauty of who God is. Contemplation of the divine beauty is presented as the supreme human occupation.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

C. S. Lewis

Author of The Weight of Glory; Oxford, 1898–1963

“We are far too easily pleased.” — The Weight of Glory

David's one request is not for safety, success, or even spiritual victory—it is for vision. To see the beauty of God. This is a request for the highest good, what theologians call the beatific vision. Every other blessing David might have requested would be satisfied by this one.

Lewis wrote that we settle for lesser pleasures—mud pies in a slum—when we have been invited to a holiday at the sea. The longing behind every beautiful thing you have ever seen or felt is a longing for this: to see God as He is. Today, let that longing surface and bring it to God. Ask for the one thing David asked.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Lord, one thing I ask: to see Your beauty. Let every act of worship today—however small—be a turning of my eyes toward You. I want to know You as You are. Amen.
