Carmen Joy Imes — Old Testament scholar and author of Bearing God's Name, whose expertise in Leviticus and the holiness code reveals why this quote from Leviticus 11 is the most important command in the entire Law.
ἀναστροφῇ
anastrophē · Greek NT“conduct / way of life / manner of living”
anastrophē (from ana + strephŏ, to turn around) refers to the whole pattern of daily behavior—how one moves through life. Peter commands holiness 'in all your conduct'—not just in religious moments but in every facet of observable life. The call to be holy is comprehensive and practical.
Peter quotes from Leviticus 11:44—the heart of the Torah's holiness code. The logic is identity-based, not command-based: 'You shall be holy because I am holy.' Holiness is not an arbitrary rule but a call to reflect the character of the God who called you. The imitation is grounded in relationship.
Imes shows that in Leviticus, holiness was about being set apart for God's purposes—distinctive in the world, not withdrawn from it. The call to holy conduct in 'all your way of life' is a call to let God's character show in every sphere. Today, what sphere of your life most needs the holiness that reflects who called you?
