Mother Teresa of Calcutta — Missionaries of Charity founder and Nobel Peace laureate, whose ministry to abandoned children and dying infants embodied Jesus's indignation at the exclusion of the vulnerable.

Word Study

ἠγανάκτησεν

ēganaktēsen · Greek NT

“was indignant / was deeply offended”

aganakteŏ means to be greatly displeased, to feel righteous indignation. This is one of the rare moments in the Gospels where Jesus's emotion is anger—not at sinners but at His own disciples for blocking access to Him. The exclusion of children from Christ triggers His deepest displeasure.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Mother Teresa

Missionaries of Charity; Calcutta, 1910–1997

“The child is the beauty of God present in the world.” — A Simple Path

The disciples thought they were protecting Jesus from interruption. Jesus was indignant: nothing could be further from His desire. Children, who bring nothing of accomplishment or status, model the exact disposition required for the kingdom—receptive, trusting, without pretension. The kingdom belongs to those who come like this.

Mother Teresa saw every abandoned child as bearing the face of Christ. Her willingness to receive and care for the most helpless was a response to this scene in Mark. Where in your life are you—or others around you—inadvertently hindering the vulnerable from coming to Jesus? Jesus is still indignant about that.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Lord Jesus, let the children come. Let me never be the obstacle between a child—or anyone—and Your open arms. Make me a welcomer, not a gatekeeper. Amen.
