In the Beginning, God Created

Genesis 1:1

Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com

Scripture
Genesis 1:1 LXX Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἐποίησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Author & Audience

Genesis was composed in the Mosaic tradition for a generation of Israelites who had just walked out of Egypt. They had spent four hundred years among gods who were rivers, sun-disks, fertility, and pharaoh. The first sentence of the Torah is a polemic. The God of Israel is not in the heavens or the earth; he made them. Everything else in Israel's worldview hangs from that one verb.

Word Study

בְּרֵאשִׁית

bereshit · Hebrew

“in the beginning of”

Bereshit is a construct form — literally "in beginning of." It does not mark an absolute first moment but the opening of an ordered project. The same root resh gives us "head," "chief," "first." Genesis is not narrating a launch; it is naming the head of a story whose body fills sixty-five further books.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

John Polkinghorne

physicist and Anglican priest

“The universe is shot through with signs of mind — and the mind belongs to its Maker, not to us.” — paraphrased from Belief in God in an Age of Science

Polkinghorne spent his career as a Cambridge mathematical physicist before he was ordained. He used to say that the deep intelligibility of the universe — the fact that mathematics, written by minds, fits the world — is the best evidence we have that mind precedes matter. Genesis 1:1 says the same thing in eight Hebrew words.

The verse does not argue. It announces. The proper response to it is not first analysis; it is awe. Before this God spoke, there was no word and no listener. Before he created, there was no place for creation to be. Whatever your day asks of you, it asks under that fact.

Continue your study: A Sinner's Statement of Beliefs — Article 1 of our beliefs starts where Genesis starts: with God as Maker. Read it again with this verse in your other hand.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Maker of the heavens and the earth, before the world was, you were. Teach me today to live as a creature, not as a maker of my own story. Let the first sentence of Genesis frame the first thought of my morning. In the name of your Son, by whom all things were made, Amen.
