The Lord Is My Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 (Psalm 22:1 LXX)

Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com

Scripture
Psalm 22:1 LXX (Psalm 23:1 ESV) Κύριος ποιμαίνει με, καὶ οὐδέν με ὑστερήσει. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Author & Audience

David writes from the inside of two callings — he was a shepherd boy before he was king. He is not romanticizing pastoral life; he is using the only metaphor he had for what it costs to keep a vulnerable thing alive. And he writes this psalm not as the shepherd, but as the sheep.

Word Study

ποιμαίνει

poimainei · Greek (LXX)

“shepherds (verb, present tense)”

The Greek is in the present tense: "shepherds me." Not has shepherded, not will shepherd — today, while you are reading this, the Lord is shepherding you. The same root gives us "pastor" in the New Testament. To pastor a flock is not to lecture them; it is to keep them alive.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Brennan Manning

former Franciscan priest, author of The Ragamuffin Gospel

“My deepest awareness of myself is that I am deeply loved by Jesus Christ, and I have done nothing to earn it.” The Ragamuffin Gospel (1990)

Manning came back to this conviction after every relapse, every shame, every failure of his own spiritual heroism. The shepherd of Psalm 23 is not the manager of a small business; he is the kind who carries lambs home on his shoulders when they cannot walk anymore.

If your week begins with the suspicion that the Lord is tolerating you, this verse is a correction. The shepherd is not annoyed by the sheep. He is provisioning them. Right now, today, before you have done a single thing worth shepherding, you are being shepherded.

Continue your study: The Lord's Prayer — "Give us this day our daily bread" is Psalm 23 in seven words. The shepherd in the psalm is the Father in the prayer.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Shepherd of my life, I shall not want. Lead me today to green pastures and quiet waters when I cannot find them myself. When I am restless, lay me down. When I wander, bring me home. In Jesus' name, Amen.
