He Has Made Everything Beautiful in Its Time

Ecclesiastes 3:11

Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com

Scripture
He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.
Author & Audience

Qoheleth — "the Preacher" — writes from inside the wisdom tradition associated with Solomon. He is speaking to the kind of person who has tried to make sense of life from under the sun and has come up short. Ecclesiastes is the Bible's most honest book about the limits of unaided human reason.

Word Study

עֹלָם

olam · Hebrew

“eternity, the long view, hidden time”

The word can mean "eternity," but it also carries the sense of the time you cannot see — the past too far back to recover, the future too far forward to reach. God has put that in the human heart. We are wired to ache for what we cannot grasp.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

J.R.R. Tolkien

philologist, novelist, Catholic, author of The Lord of the Rings

“We have come from God, and inevitably the myths woven by us, though they contain error, will also reflect a splintered fragment of the true light.” On Fairy-Stories (1947)

Tolkien argued that the universal human longing for stories of eucatastrophe — the sudden joyous turn just before disaster — is not a coping mechanism. It is a homing signal. The longing for an ending we cannot quite imagine is, he said, the heart's witness that an ending exists.

Qoheleth says the same thing in older words. God has put eternity in your heart. That is why no good day stays good enough, why every beautiful thing aches a little, why you cannot fully fit into your own life. You are not malfunctioning. You are remembering a country you have not yet been to.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Father, you have put eternity in my heart, and you know I cannot reach it from here. Make today beautiful in its time — not a day I have to redeem by my own striving, but a day you have already weighed and called good. In Jesus' name, Amen.
