I Am the Way
John 14:6
Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com
John records this in the upper room on the night Jesus is betrayed. Thomas has just asked an honest, uncomfortable question: "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" Jesus' answer is one of the most condensed sentences in the New Testament. The way is not a map. The way is a Person you can stand next to.
ὁδός
hodos · Greek“way, path, road, route”
Hodos was an early self-designation of Christianity (Acts 9:2 — "any belonging to the Way"). It carries the sense of a road you walk, not a destination you reach. Jesus does not say I will show you the way. He says I am the way. The road and the road's owner are the same person.
BibleProject traces "the way of the Lord" through Isaiah, the Gospels, and Acts. The recurring picture is a path through wilderness that always leads back to God's presence. Jesus' claim in John 14 is breathtaking: that path is no longer a route on a map. It is him.
The narrowness of "no one comes to the Father except through me" is not the narrowness of an exclusive club. It is the narrowness of a single bridge over a chasm. Christianity does not say one road among many. It says one Person, who is also the road, on whom every other route was always quietly depending.
