The Power of God for Salvation
Romans 1:16-17

Augustine on the gospel as God's own dynamic power — not merely good news but the active force by which God rescues every soul that believes.
δύναμις
dynamis · Greek NT“power, might, ability”
The root of our word dynamite. Paul does not call the gospel a persuasive argument or a moral system; he calls it the very power of God. Δύναμις in the NT regularly describes miraculous, transforming energy — the same word used for the power of the Spirit (Acts 1:8) and the power behind Christ's resurrection (Eph 1:19–20).
Augustine spent years chasing wisdom in philosophy and rhetoric before encountering the gospel as the very power of God. He discovered that no amount of intellectual striving could produce what only grace can give. The gospel does not merely inform; it transforms by the energy of God Himself working in the heart of every believer.
Paul's courage — 'I am not ashamed' — comes directly from this conviction. When you know you carry the power of God, not your own persuasive skill, shame gives way to boldness. Reflect today: do you share the gospel as though it depends on your eloquence, or with the confidence that God's power is doing the work?
