A Living Hope
1 Peter 1:3–5
Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com
C. S. Lewis — beloved author of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia, whose clear reasoning on hope and heaven has guided millions of believers.
ἐλπίδα ζῶσαν
elpida zŏsan · Greek NT“a living hope”
elpis means hope or expectation; zŏsan (from zaŏ, to live) marks this hope as active and alive, not mere wishful thinking but a resurrection-grounded certainty that sustains the believer through every trial.
Peter writes from exile to scattered believers, and his opening burst of praise centers on hope—not the fragile kind that depends on circumstances, but a living hope born from the empty tomb. Because Christ rose, the inheritance waiting for you cannot rot, cannot be polluted, and cannot fade. Heaven itself is its vault.
Lewis saw hope as a virtue to be practiced, not merely felt. Today, rehearse your inheritance deliberately: name one thing you are confident of because of the resurrection. Let that confidence breathe life back into your faith when pressures press hard.
