Scripture
1 Peter 5:6–7 (Greek NT / ESV) Ταπεινώθητε οὖν ὑπὸ τὴν κραταιὰν χεῖρα τοῦ θεοῦ, ἵνα ὑμᾶς ὑψώση ἐν καιρῷ· πᾶσαν τὴν μέριμναν ὑμῶν ἐπιρίψαντες ἐπ’ αὐτόν, ὅτι αὐτῷ μέλει περὶ ὑμῶν Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Word Study

μέριμναν

merimnан · Greek NT

“anxieties / worries”

merimna carries the sense of a divided, distracted mind—pulled in multiple directions by care and concern. Peter commands a complete casting (epiripsantes, aorist) of every such divided worry onto God.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Brennan Manning

Author of The Ragamuffin Gospel; 1934–2013

“God loves you as you are, not as you should be.” — The Ragamuffin Gospel, chapter 2

Peter places humility before relief: first, humble yourself under God’s mighty hand; then, cast your anxieties on Him. The sequence matters. Pride tries to carry its own load; humility hands it to a God whose hand is both mighty and caring. The same hand that governs history holds your particular worry.

Manning wrote from personal brokenness about a God whose care for us is not conditional on our composure. You do not need to clean up your anxiety before bringing it to God—you bring the raw weight of it. What specific worry can you name and deliberately cast onto Him right now?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Father, I humble myself under Your mighty hand. Here is my anxiety: take it. I trust that You care for me. Exalt Your purposes in me at the right time. Amen.
