If We Confess Our Sins
1 John 1:8–9
Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com
Augustine of Hippo — Bishop, theologian, and author of Confessions, whose unflinching honesty about sin and grace shaped the entire Western Christian tradition on confession and forgiveness.
ὁμολογῶμεν
homologŏmen · Greek NT“we confess / we acknowledge”
homologeŏ combines homos (same) and lego (to speak)—literally to say the same thing. Confession is agreeing with God about our sin: calling it what He calls it, without minimizing or excusing. The promise is tied to this honest alignment.
John writes to a community tempted toward spiritual self-deception. To claim sinlessness is not humility—it is a lie that cuts the person off from the very forgiveness they need. The invitation is radically honest: confess. And the promise is equally radical: God is faithful and just—not merely merciful—to forgive and cleanse completely.
Augustine knew the weight of refusing to confess and the lightness that follows honest acknowledgment. The ground of forgiveness is not the quality of the confession but the faithfulness of God. Bring your sin specifically, by name, today—and let His faithfulness be larger than your failure.
