Perfect Love Casts Out Fear
1 John 4:18

C. S. Lewis — Oxford don and author of The Four Loves and Mere Christianity, whose writings on love and fear illuminate this verse with both theological precision and personal warmth.
τελεία ἀγάπη
teleia agapē · Greek NT“perfect love / complete love”
teleios means complete, mature, brought to its intended end (from telos, end/goal). Perfect love is not flawless in performance but complete in its nature and direction—fully oriented toward the beloved. Such love, when it takes hold of us, has no room for fear's paralysis.
John identifies the root of fear as punishment—we fear because we expect judgment. But perfect love has already addressed judgment: Christ took the punishment, so the believer stands in the love of a Father who has nothing left to condemn. Fear, then, is not merely an emotion to manage but a signal of incomplete love-reception.
Lewis wrote that love always involves vulnerability and risk. The antidote to anxious fear is not more self-confidence but deeper immersion in the love God has for us. Today, notice what you fear. Trace it to its root—what punishment do you expect? Then bring that specific fear to the One whose love is complete.
