Author & Audience

Brennan Manning — former Franciscan priest and author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, whose preaching on God's faithfulness to keep broken and stumbling believers brought deep comfort to the ragamuffins.

Word Study

ἀπταίστους

aptaistous · Greek NT

“without stumbling / blameless in footing”

aptaistos combines a- (without) and ptaiŏ (to stumble, to trip). It is used of a sure-footed horse that does not stumble. The word is striking because Jude has spent the entire letter warning about those who have stumbled—yet the doxology ends with God's power to keep you on your feet.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Brennan Manning

Author of The Ragamuffin Gospel; 1934–2013

“The ragamuffin who sees his darkness can begin to see God's light.” — The Ragamuffin Gospel, chapter 6

Jude has warned throughout his letter about spiritual danger, apostasy, and those who have fallen away. Then he closes not with another warning but with a doxology of confidence: God is able to keep you from stumbling. The final word is not danger—it is power. The same God who is aware of every stumble is able to prevent the fatal fall.

Manning knew that ragamuffins are chronic stumblers who desperately need a keeper, not just a teacher. You do not maintain your own standing before God—He presents you blameless. In whatever weakness you are aware of today, rest in this: He is able. Your security is in His ability, not your performance.
