Author & Audience

Brennan Manning — former Franciscan priest and author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, whose reflection on Christ's blood-bought love speaks with particular power to those who feel unworthy of the priestly identity Revelation declares.

Word Study

λύσαντι

lusanti · Greek NT

“freed / loosed / released”

luŏ means to loose, to untie, to set free—the image is of bonds being cut. The aorist tense marks a completed, decisive act. Christ has already freed us from our sins; the liberation is accomplished, not pending. Some manuscripts read 'washed' (lousanti) which is also textually significant.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Brennan Manning

Author of The Ragamuffin Gospel; 1934–2013

“We have been set free to live in the present moment.” — Ruthless Trust, chapter 3

Revelation begins not with apocalyptic terror but with a doxology of love. Before John describes visions of beasts and seals, he establishes who Jesus is: the one who loves us—present tense, ongoing—and who freed us—past tense, accomplished—and who made us a royal priesthood. This is the lens through which all the rest of Revelation is to be read.

Manning always returned to the present-tense love: 'to him who loves us.' Not loved us once and moved on, but loves us now, continuously, in this moment. Whatever difficulty today holds, you are moving through it held by present, active, unbroken love. Let that be the first word and the last word of your day.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, To You who loves me now, who freed me by Your blood, who made me a priest before the Father—glory and dominion belong to You forever. Let me live from that freedom today. Amen.
