Author & Audience

Nancy Pearcey — professor at Houston Christian University and author of Love Thy Body, whose work on the image of God grounds human dignity in creation theology rather than in human achievement or social consensus.

Word Study

εἰκὼν θεοῦ

eikŏn theou · Greek LXX

“image of God”

eikŏn (image, likeness) in the ancient Near East was used of a king's statue placed in regions he could not personally occupy—representing the king's presence and authority. The imago Dei means every human being is God's authorized representative in creation, bearing His identity and authority. This grounds human dignity unconditionally.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Nancy Pearcey

Professor, Houston Christian University; author of Love Thy Body

“Human dignity is not earned or achieved—it is given by the Creator.” — Love Thy Body, chapter 1

Genesis 9:6 places a radical foundation under the prohibition of murder: human life is sacred because every person bears the image of God. This is not a cultural consensus or a legal convention—it is a creational fact. The image is not lost in the fall (Genesis 9 is post-flood), and it cannot be revoked by behavior, disease, or social status.

Pearcey shows how every contemporary debate about human dignity—abortion, euthanasia, slavery, human trafficking—ultimately turns on whether we accept or reject the imago Dei. When you see a person today—any person—you are looking at someone who bears God's image. Let that reality shape how you treat them.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Lord, every person I encounter today bears Your image. Help me see them as You see them—and treat them accordingly. Amen.
