What Is Truth?
John 18:37–38
Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com
Francis Schaeffer — theologian and founder of L'Abri Fellowship, whose ministry was built on answering Pilate's question—demonstrating that truth is not a preference but a Person standing in front of every person who asks.
ἀλήθεια
alētheia · Greek NT“truth”
alētheia (from a- + lanthano, 'not hidden') means that which is real, not concealed, corresponds to reality. Jesus has just said in John 14:6 that He is 'the truth'—not merely truthful but the personal embodiment of all reality. When Pilate asks 'What is truth?' the answer is standing in front of him.
Pilate's question is the most poignant in the Passion narrative—and the saddest. He asks 'What is truth?' and immediately walks away without waiting for an answer. The answer was the Person before him. This is the condition of every human being who has encountered Jesus: we either listen to His voice or walk away.
Schaeffer spent his life at L'Abri helping skeptics and seekers engage the question Pilate asked. He taught that Christianity's claim is not 'this works for me' but 'this is true'—objectively, universally, for everyone. The Jesus standing before Pilate is the same Jesus standing before every generation's crisis of meaning. What question are you walking away from today without waiting for His answer?
