Abound in Hope
Romans 15:13
Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com
Brennan Manning — former Franciscan priest and author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, whose ministry to the broken and despairing communicated that hope is not earned but poured out by God Himself.
περισσεύειν
perisseuein · Greek NT“abound / overflow / have more than enough”
perisseuŏ means to exceed a measure, to have an overflow, to superabound. Paul does not pray that believers will merely maintain hope—he prays that they will overflow with it. This overflow is not produced by human resolve but by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Paul calls God 'the God of hope'—hope is not incidental to God's character but central to it. And the overflow of hope comes through believing: as we trust, the God of hope pours in joy and peace as byproducts. The Holy Spirit is the power source; faith is the conduit; hope is the overflow.
Manning knew despair from personal experience and ministered to many who had lost hope. His message was consistent: hope is not a feeling you generate—it is a gift you receive from the God who is its source. Today, stop trying to manufacture hope. Ask the God of hope to fill you—and trust that He will.
