Author & Audience

Brennan Manning — former Franciscan priest and author of Abba's Child, whose reflections on the peace of a beloved child draw out what makes Christ's peace categorically different from anything the world offers.

Word Study

εἰρήνην τὴν ἐμήν

eirēnēn tēn emēn · Greek NT

“my peace”

The definite article + possessive pronoun (tēn emēn) makes this emphatically personal: not a generic peace but the specific peace that Jesus Himself possesses and now bestows. The Farewell Discourse peace is the shalom of the Son's own relationship with the Father, transferred to believers.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Brennan Manning

Author of Abba's Child; 1934–2013

“The impostor lives in dread. The beloved child lives in peace.” — Abba's Child, chapter 3

Jesus distinguishes His peace from the world's: the world gives a peace contingent on circumstances—when things go well, you feel at peace. Jesus gives His own peace—the peace of a Son who knows His Father perfectly and trusts Him completely. This peace is not disrupted by circumstances because it does not depend on them.

Manning taught that the deepest enemy of peace is the 'impostor self'—the anxious performer who believes love must be earned. When you know you are Abba's beloved child, you rest in a peace the world cannot give or take away. Today, let the Son's own peace—not the world's version—settle over you. Let not your heart be troubled.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Lord Jesus, I receive Your peace—not the world's version but Yours. Let it settle my troubled heart today. I am not alone; You are with me. Amen.
