Make a Joyful Noise
Psalm 100:1–3
Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com
Carmen Joy Imes — Old Testament scholar and author of Being God's Image, whose work on the Psalms and human identity as God's people illuminates this call to joyful, knowing worship.
Ἀλαλάξατε
Alalaxate · Greek LXX“shout aloud / make a joyful noise / raise a battle cry”
alalazo was originally the battle cry or the shout of triumph—exuberant, loud, physically engaged. The LXX uses it here for the worship of all the earth. Worship in this psalm is not quiet and tentative but full-throated and exuberant, grounded in the knowledge of who God is.
The psalm begins with a command to shout—not whisper, not mumble—and its foundation is theological: Know that the LORD, He is God. Worship is grounded in knowledge. Exuberance flows from recognition. When you truly know who God is (Creator, Shepherd, Lord of all the earth), the appropriate response is not a polite nod but a joyful noise.
Imes shows that 'we are his people and the sheep of his pasture' is not a humble self-deprecation but a statement of beloved belonging. Sheep with a good shepherd are not anxious—they are cared for and at rest. Today, let knowledge lead to joy, and joy lead to a noise worth making. What could you sing, shout, or declare to God right now?
