Before the Judgment Seat of Christ

E. Stanley Jones — Methodist missionary and author of Abundant Living, whose frank preaching on accountability before Christ called believers to live with eternity's values consciously in view.
βήματος
bēmatos · Greek NT“judgment seat / tribunal”
bēma was the raised platform in a Roman city from which a magistrate or emperor delivered rulings. Paul uses it both for human courts (Acts 18:12) and for Christ's final tribunal. This is distinct from the Great White Throne judgment (Revelation 20)—commentators widely understand 2 Corinthians 5:10 as the evaluation of believers' service and stewardship.
Paul's awareness of the judgment seat does not paralyze him—it motivates him. Immediately after this verse he writes: 'Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others' (v.11). The certainty of giving account sharpens the urgency of the present. Every day is lived in the light of that day.
Jones found that the prospect of Christ's evaluation was not terrifying for those who trusted in His grace but clarifying. It asked the right question: not 'Did I succeed?' but 'Was I faithful with what was given?' Today, live with that question in view—not with anxiety but with focused intentionality.
