Whatever You Do in Word or Deed
Colossians 3:17

Brennan Manning — former Franciscan priest and author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, whose vision of the totality of life as lived before and through Christ transforms even mundane action into sacred offering.
ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου Ἰησοῦ
en onomati kuriou Iēsou · Greek NT“in the name of the Lord Jesus”
Acting 'in the name of' someone in the ancient world meant acting as their authorized representative, under their authority, and in a way consistent with their character. Every word and deed done in Christ's name is a representation of who He is—a sobering and ennobling frame for all of life.
Paul allows no sacred-secular divide. Every word, every deed—the boardroom memo, the children's bedtime story, the traffic jam, the meal prepared—all of it is to be done in Christ's name, as His representative, with gratitude to the Father. The ordinary is not a break from the sacred; the ordinary is where the sacred lives.
Manning wrote from a life full of ordinary failures and grace-soaked recoveries. His insight was that every moment is an opportunity to let Christ be present through your action—or to block His presence through self-absorption. Today has no secular hours. Everything you do can be a name-bearing act.
