From Him and Through Him and To Him
Romans 11:36

John Polkinghorne — physicist and Anglican priest, author of The Faith of a Physicist, whose dual expertise in cosmology and theology makes this three-preposition summary of all reality peculiarly luminous.
ἐξ αὐτοῦ… δι' αὐτοῦ… εἰς αὐτόν
ex autou… di autou… eis auton · Greek NT“from him… through him… to him”
Three Greek prepositions map the entire relationship of all things to God: ex (from)—God is the source; dia (through)—God is the sustaining means; eis (into/toward)—God is the goal. All of creation, all of history, all of redemption moves in this triadic orbit. Nothing is outside this frame.
Paul has spent eleven chapters on the depth of God's plan—predestination, Israel, Gentiles, mercy, hardening, the olive tree. He ends not with a systematic conclusion but with a doxology: from Him, through Him, to Him are all things. The theology dissolves into worship. This is the right response to the depths of God.
Polkinghorne spent his career showing that the universe—its comprehensibility, its fine-tuning, its elegant mathematics—points beyond itself to a Source. Paul compresses that into six words: from Him. And it all returns: to Him. Your life is part of that great from-and-to movement. Live today as an arrow aimed at God's glory.
