Word Study

ἀπόκρισις ὑπεικτική

apokrisis hupeiktikē · Greek LXX

“a yielding answer / a gentle response”

hupeikŏ means to yield, to give way, to be submissive—the opposite of forcing or dominating. The LXX renders the Hebrew 'soft' (rakh) with this active-yielding word. The gentle answer does not suppress the truth but delivers it without the force that ignites opposition. It requires more self-control, not less conviction.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Nancy Pearcey

Professor, Houston Christian University; author of Love Thy Body

“Our words reveal whether we see the image of God in the people we address.” — Love Thy Body, chapter 7

Proverbs is not naive about conflict—it is precise about it. The soft answer does not deny the dispute; it changes the atmosphere in which it happens. Harshness meets resistance; gentleness opens ears. This is not weakness but wisdom—the understanding that how you say something determines whether it can be received.

Pearcey argues that the way we speak to people reveals what we believe about their dignity. Every conversation is a test of whether we see an image-bearer or merely an obstacle. Today you will face moments of friction—potential conflict. In each one, you can choose the word that stirs up anger or the word that turns it away.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Lord, set a guard over my mouth today. When I want to respond harshly, give me the soft word that opens rather than closes, that turns away anger rather than multiplying it. Amen.
