Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com

Scripture
καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν πάντες πνεύματος ἁγίου When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place … And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Author & Audience

BibleProject — Tim Mackie and Jon Collins' biblical literacy platform, whose exploration of the Pentecost narrative in its Old Testament context—Sinai, the harvest festival, the reversal of Babel—reveals the full scope of what Acts 2 inaugurates.

Word Study

ἐπλήσθησαν

eplēsthēsan · Greek NT

“they were filled / they were full”

pimplēmi (to fill, to fill completely) is used throughout Luke-Acts for the Spirit's filling. The passive voice again indicates divine action: they were filled by the Spirit. Acts records multiple instances of this filling (2:4; 4:8, 31; 9:17; 13:9), suggesting it is not a one-time event but a recurring experience for those who are open to it.

“Pentecost is the reversal of Babel—the Spirit unites what sin divided.” — BibleProject Acts series

Pentecost is the birthday of the church—but it is also the fulfillment of an ancient promise. Joel had said 'I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh' (Joel 2:28); Ezekiel had promised new hearts animated by the Spirit (Ezekiel 36:26–27). The tongues of fire, the wind, the languages—all of them signal the arrival of the new creation age.

BibleProject shows how Acts 2 deliberately reverses Genesis 11: at Babel, one language became many as humanity scattered; at Pentecost, many languages proclaim one message as the scattered are gathered. The Spirit does not merely empower individuals—He constitutes a community. You are part of that Pentecost community. The filling is available today.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Holy Spirit, fill me again today. Let the same wind and fire that fell at Pentecost move through me—uniting, empowering, and sending me to declare the wonders of God. Amen.
