Acts 2:1–4 (Greek NT / ESV) Καὶ ἐν τῷ συμπληροῦσθαι τὴν ἡμέραν τῆς πεντηκοστῆς ἦσαν πάντες ὁμοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό… καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν πάντες πνεύματος ἁγίου When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place … And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

ἐπλήσθησαν

eplēsthēsan · Greek NT

“they were filled / they were full”

pimplēmi (to fill, to fill completely) is used throughout Luke-Acts for the Spirit's filling. The passive voice again indicates divine action: they were filled by the Spirit. Acts records multiple instances of this filling (2:4; 4:8, 31; 9:17; 13:9), suggesting it is not a one-time event but a recurring experience for those who are open to it.

Pentecost is the birthday of the church—but it is also the fulfillment of an ancient promise. Joel had said 'I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh' (Joel 2:28); Ezekiel had promised new hearts animated by the Spirit (Ezekiel 36:26–27).
