Word Study

ἡ ἀρχὴ καὶ τὸ τέλος

hē archē kai to telos · Greek NT

“the beginning and the end”

archē (beginning, origin, first principle) and telos (end, goal, completion) form the final pair in a triple title. Together with Alpha-Omega and First-Last, they assert absolute sovereignty over all of time and history: Christ is the origin from which everything flows and the goal toward which everything moves. Nothing is outside His frame.

Reflection

From the writers we read together

Michael Heiser

OT scholar; author of The Unseen Realm; 1963–2023

“Every divine title in Revelation points to the same conclusion: Jesus is Lord of all.” — The Unseen Realm, epilogue

As Revelation draws to its close, Christ speaks this triple self-identification: Alpha and Omega, First and Last, Beginning and End. Three ways of saying the same thing with absolute comprehensiveness: there is nothing before Him, nothing after Him, nothing outside Him. He is the total frame of all reality.

Heiser shows that these are Yahweh-titles from Isaiah, applied here to Christ with unmistakable deliberateness. The book that began with 'in the beginning was the Word' ends with 'I am the Beginning.' You began this 365-day journey in the hands of the Alpha—and you arrive at Day 364 still in the hands of the Omega. He has held every step.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, Lord Jesus, You are the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Every step of my journey has been held by You. All glory to You, now and forever. Amen.
