The Lord Is My Shepherd

Psalm 22 LXX — A meditation on God as our Shepherd

Pleasant Springs Church • ps-church.com

Scripture
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
Reflection

David is writing as a king who once was a shepherd. He knows what it costs to keep a flock alive — the long watches, the wolves, the lost lambs carried home on tired shoulders. And he writes this psalm not as the shepherd, but as the sheep. The reversal is the whole point: the man with the rod has handed the rod to God.

Ποιμαίνει — "shepherds me" — is in the present tense in the LXX. Not has shepherded, not will shepherd. Right now, today, while you are reading this, the Lord is shepherding you. The green pastures and still waters are not a vacation God plans for the next life. They are the rhythms of provision he is already keeping over you, even on weeks that feel arid.

If you are tired this Sunday, hear this carefully: you are not the shepherd of your own life. You were never built to be. The hand on the staff is older and steadier than yours.

Prayer
Pray with us Lord, you are my Shepherd, and I shall not want. Lead me this week to green pastures and quiet waters when I cannot find them myself. When I am restless, lay me down. When I am thirsty, refresh me. When I wander, bring me home. In Jesus' name, Amen.
