Why Did God Create Satan?
The left end of the board, that evening

By evening the board had filled up. The left end picked up some of the biggest new questions: Satan, death, what God is, and why good people sometimes die young. Find yours below — and if you know a good answer, share it at the bottom of the page.
The Bible was not written all at once. Moses wrote the first books about 1,400 years before Jesus, and the prophets added to them over many centuries until the Old Testament was complete. The New Testament was written by Jesus’ apostles and their companions within a lifetime of His resurrection. The oldest complete Bibles we still have are hand-copied books from about AD 350, and the first Bible ever printed on a press was Gutenberg’s, in the 1450s.
Yes — every person lives forever. Death is not the end of you. The real question is where and with whom: forever with God, or forever apart from Him. Jesus came so that we could live forever with Him, and He promises that whoever believes in Him will live even though they die.
We don’t always know, and it is all right to say so. What the Bible does say is that God knows every one of our days before the first one begins, and that when a righteous person is taken early, they are taken into peace. A short life held by God is not a wasted life, and for those who belong to Jesus, death is not the end of the story.
God didn’t create a devil. He created a good angel, and that angel chose to rebel. God made beings who were free to love Him, and real freedom means the choice can go the wrong way. God knew it would, and He still made a world where love is real, because He also knew how He would win: Jesus came “to destroy the works of the devil.”
When God the Son became a man, Jesus, He died on the cross at about 33 years old. Luke says He was about 30 when He began His ministry, and it lasted around three years. But God did not stop existing: the Father and the Spirit never died, and Jesus rose three days later. He is alive forevermore.
God is the Creator of everything, and He was never created. He is spirit, so He has no body like ours. He is one God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And He is love. When Moses asked His name, God answered, “I AM WHO I AM.”
