The right end of the board: handwritten questions on the BBQ board
The right end of the board, as you left it.

The right end of the board went straight to the heart of it: sin, the cross, heaven, and how a holy God could love a sinner. Some of you even wrote answers for each other. Find yours below — and if you know a good answer, share it at the bottom of the page.

How many books are in the Bible?also asked: What are the books of the Bible?
Answered on the board“66”

The board got it right: 66 — 39 in the Old Testament (Genesis to Malachi) and 27 in the New Testament (Matthew to Revelation). Written by about 40 authors over some 1,500 years, it tells one story: God making a family and bringing it home through Jesus.

2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,”
What is sin?

Sin is missing the mark — living apart from God’s way, whether by what we do, what we say, or what we leave undone. John calls it lawlessness: going our own way instead of His. Everyone has done it, which is exactly why everyone needs a Savior.

1 John 3:4 (ESV)
“Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.”
Romans 3:23 (ESV)
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
How can God love me? I’m a sinner.
Answered on the board“He will always love you!! · Because He forgives”

Both answers on the board are true. God did not wait for you to clean up first — He loved you while you were still a sinner, and He proved it at the cross. His love is not a prize for good people; it is a gift for people who know they need it.

Romans 5:8 (ESV)
“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Does God have a dad?

No. God was never born and never began — He has always been. What the Bible does teach is that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit: the Father is the Father of Jesus, and through Jesus He becomes our Father too. That is why Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father.”

John 1:1 (ESV)
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Galatians 4:6 (ESV)
“And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!””
Why did Jesus have to die?also asked: Why did God die on the cross for us?
Answered on the board“To save our lives.”

The board answer is the heart of it. Sin separates us from God, who is life — and the wages of sin is death. Jesus, God the Son made man, took our death on Himself so that we could have His life. He died for us, and three days later He rose, so death does not get the last word.

1 Peter 3:18 (ESV)
“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,”
John 3:16 (ESV)
““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
How do I know right from wrong?

God gave you a conscience — that inner sense that some things are just wrong — and He gave you His Word to sharpen it. Start where Micah does: do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God. When you are unsure, ask: does this love God and love my neighbor?

Micah 6:8 (ESV)
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Romans 2:15 (ESV)
“They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them”
Does everyone who drinks, or takes their own life, or didn’t get saved before dying, go to heaven? Did they get to ask for forgiveness before they got to heaven? Amen, in Jesus’ name.

This is a tender question, and it is usually asked about someone we love. Here is what Scripture says plainly: we are not saved by how clean our last day was, but by Jesus. Anyone who truly belongs to Him is held by Him, and nothing — not a hard death, not a struggle they never beat — can pull them out of His hand. God alone sees every heart, and we can trust Him to be both just and kind. For those of us still here, the invitation is today: turn to Jesus now, while there is time.

Romans 8:38–39 (ESV)
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
John 10:28 (ESV)
“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
