What Is My Purpose?

The middle of the board

The middle of the board: handwritten questions on the BBQ board
The middle of the board, as you left it.

Right under the big QUESTIONS sign: purpose, which Bible, which denomination, yoga — and one very reasonable question about school lunch. Find yours below — and if you know a good answer, share it at the bottom of the page.

What is my purpose?also asked: Why am I here?

You are here on purpose. God made you to know Him, to love Him, and to love the people around you — and He has good work already prepared with your name on it. Purpose is not something you have to invent; it is something you walk into when you walk with Him.

Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Mark 12:30–31 (ESV)
“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.””
Which Bible is best?

The best Bible is the one you will actually read. Any faithful translation from the original languages will lead you to Jesus. At Pleasant Springs we read the English Standard Version (ESV), and that is the translation quoted on these pages. Pick one you understand, and read it every day.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
What is the most common misconception?

Probably this one: that you have to get your life cleaned up before God will have you. Jesus said the exact opposite — He came for sinners, not for people who think they are fine. Come as you are. That is what our church’s welcome means.

Luke 5:31–32 (ESV)
“And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.””
What’s your favorite Bible verse or book of the Bible?
Answered on the board“Psalms 23”

Great choice. Psalm 23 has carried people through hospital rooms, battlefields and graveside services for three thousand years. If you only memorize one verse, make it this one.

Psalm 23:1 (ESV)
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
Which denomination is right?

No denomination saves anybody — Jesus does. Christians who trust Christ and hold to the faith of the ancient creeds (the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds) are one family, even when they worship in different buildings. Look for a church that preaches Jesus, teaches the Bible honestly, and loves people.

Ephesians 4:4–6 (ESV)
“There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”
What does YOGA mean?

“Yoga” comes from a Sanskrit word meaning to yoke or to join. In Hinduism it is a spiritual path meant to unite the self with the divine. Stretching is just stretching — but the spiritual side is a different yoke. Jesus offers His own: “Take my yoke upon you.”

Matthew 11:29–30 (ESV)
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.””
Can God help us?

Yes. God is not far off watching; He is near, and He helps. Sometimes He changes the situation, sometimes He changes us in it — but He never leaves. Ask Him. Prayer is not a last resort; it is the first move.

Psalm 46:1 (ESV)
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Why is God good?also asked: God IS Good!

God is not good because He passes some test of goodness — He is the goodness every good thing comes from. Every sunrise, every meal, every friend at the table is a gift from Him. And the best proof of His goodness is Jesus.

James 1:17 (ESV)
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
Why does our world have to be the way it is?

It doesn’t — and it won’t stay this way. The world is broken because people turned from God, and all creation feels it. But God has promised to set it free and make it new. What we see now is not the end of the story.

Romans 8:20–21 (ESV)
“For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.”
Why can’t lunch be free at school?

Ha — good question! Somebody always pays for lunch: the farmers, the cooks, your family, or the taxpayers. Nothing is truly free. Except this: Jesus paid for the best meal there is, and He offers it to you at no cost. (And if you are ever hungry, come to church — we will feed you.)

John 6:35 (ESV)
“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
