📚 Trees in Scripture
What the Bible’s most important trees reveal about God’s plan
💡 The Big Idea
God uses trees throughout the Bible as symbols of spiritual growth, faith, and His plan to save the world.
🌿 Section 1: The Bible Keeps Comparing People to Trees — Here’s Why
If you read the Bible carefully, you’ll notice something: God keeps describing people as trees. Not robots. Not athletes. Trees. That’s a deliberate choice, and there are good reasons for it.
Trees can’t produce life on their own — they depend on sun, water, and soil. They grow slowly but become incredibly strong. They don’t keep their fruit for themselves — they give it away. Sound familiar?
— Psalm 1:3 (NLT)
— Jeremiah 17:7–8 (NLT)
Think About It: What does it mean that a tree “is not bothered by drought” when its roots reach deep water? How could that apply to your life when things get hard?
🌿 Section 2: Trees Store Life and Give It Away
You may have learned about photosynthesis in school. Trees take in sunlight and convert it into energy. That energy gets stored in the wood, roots, and fruit — and then released as oxygen and food for others. The tree doesn’t keep the energy for itself.
The Bible uses this exact pattern to explain how a life connected to God works. You receive God’s Word and presence, store it inside, and eventually it comes out as love, kindness, and wisdom that blesses the people around you.
Sunlight + Water → Energy → Fruit & Oxygen
God’s Word + Prayer → Growth → Love & Good Works
🌳 Section 3: Five Key Trees in the Bible
🌲 The Tree of Life (Genesis 2 & Revelation 22)
God placed the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve sinned, they were cut off from it. But in the very last chapter of the Bible, the Tree of Life returns in the New Jerusalem — and its leaves are “for the healing of the nations.” This tree bookends the entire story of the Bible!
“On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.” — Revelation 22:2 (NLT)
🌿 The True Vine (John 15)
Jesus said, “I am the true vine.” A branch can only produce grapes if it stays connected to the vine. Cut it off and it dries up. Jesus used this picture to show that our spiritual life depends on staying connected to Him — not on trying harder.
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5 (NLT)
🫒 The Olive Tree (Romans 11)
Paul describes God’s people as an olive tree. Jewish believers are the natural branches, and Gentile believers are wild branches that have been grafted in. Paul warns: don’t be arrogant — the root supports you, not the other way around.
🍍 The Fig Tree (Matthew 21)
When Jesus cursed the fig tree, it wasn’t because He was angry at a plant. The fig tree represented Israel — a nation that looked alive on the outside but wasn’t producing real spiritual fruit. It’s a warning: appearance without substance doesn’t fool God.
✞ Section 4: The Cross — The Most Important “Tree”
Here’s something amazing: the New Testament calls the cross a “tree.” The Greek word is xylon, which means “wood” or “tree.”
— 1 Peter 2:24 (NLT)
Think about the pattern: humanity fell because of a tree in Eden. Humanity was saved because Jesus died on a tree (the cross). And in the new creation, the Tree of Life stands again — this time forever. Trees aren’t just decorations in God’s story. They’re part of the plot.
🌱 Section 5: What Kind of Tree Are You?
Jesus said you can tell what kind of tree someone is by looking at their fruit:
— Matthew 7:17–18 (NLT)
The question isn’t “Am I trying to be good?” The question is “Am I rooted in the right place?” A tree doesn’t strain to make fruit — it produces fruit naturally when it’s healthy. Your job is to stay connected to God, and the fruit will come.
💬 Discussion Questions
🙏 Let’s Pray:
Father, thank You for the picture of the tree. Help me to be rooted in You — drawing life from Your Word, staying connected to Jesus the true vine, and producing fruit that blesses everyone around me. Teach me to grow slow and grow strong. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
