🌿 You Are Like a Tree!
What trees can teach us about growing closer to God
🌟 The Big Idea
God says people who love Him are like strong, healthy trees — and He wants to help YOU grow!
🌱 Section 1: You Are Like a Tree!
Did you know the Bible says you are like a tree? That might sound silly — but it is one of the coolest things God says about you! The Bible uses trees to show what a person looks like when they are living close to God.
Trees grow toward sunlight. They drink from water. They grow strong, and then they share their fruit with everyone around them. God says that is what you look like when you love Him!
— Psalm 1:3 (NLT)
💡 Think About It: A tree planted next to a river never runs out of water. What is your “river” — where do you go to get filled up with God?
🌿 Section 2: Trees Store Life and Give It Away
Here is something amazing about trees: they soak up sunlight, water, and food from the ground, and store it all inside themselves. Then they give it back! They make oxygen for us to breathe, shade for us to sit under, and fruit for us to eat.
God made you the same way! You can soak up His Word, His love, and His Spirit — and then share it with the people around you. When you are kind, helpful, or encouraging, you are giving your “fruit” to others!
The Pattern:
Sunlight → Tree → Oxygen for the world
God’s Word → You → Love for the people around you
— Proverbs 11:30 (NLT)
🌳 Section 3: Special Trees in the Bible
The Bible talks about lots of special trees! Here are some of the most important ones:
🌲 The Tree of Life — In the very first garden God made (the Garden of Eden), there was a special tree called the Tree of Life. Eating from it meant living forever with God! Adam and Eve lost access to it when they disobeyed, but guess what? In the very last book of the Bible, the Tree of Life comes back!
“Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life… On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit.” — Revelation 22:1-2 (NLT)
🌿 The Vine — Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” A branch can’t grow fruit if it’s not connected to the vine. That means we need to stay connected to Jesus!
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5 (NLT)
🫒 The Olive Tree — The olive tree is one of the most important trees in the Bible. Its oil was used to light lamps, anoint kings, and heal the sick. The apostle Paul said God’s family is like an olive tree — and we are all branches growing together!
✞ Section 4: The Most Important Tree
The most important “tree” in the whole Bible is the cross where Jesus died. The Bible actually calls the cross a “tree”!
— 1 Peter 2:24 (NLT)
Think about it: people got in trouble because of a tree in the Garden of Eden. And Jesus fixed everything by dying on a tree (the cross)! The story of the Bible starts with a tree and ends with a tree — and Jesus is in the middle of it all.
🌱 Section 5: Growing Your Roots
So how do you grow like a healthy tree? Here are some ways:
- Read your Bible — that’s like drinking water from the river
- Pray every day — that’s like reaching your roots deep into the ground
- Go to church — that’s like getting sunlight with other trees
- Be kind to others — that’s like sharing your fruit!
🎨 Fun Activity: Draw Your Tree!
Draw a big tree and label the parts with things that help you grow in God:
- Roots = Prayer and Bible reading
- Trunk = Going to church and learning
- Branches = Your family and friends at church
- Fruit = Kind things you do for others
- Leaves = Worship and praise
Challenge: Can you name one “fruit” you can share with someone this week?
🙏 Let’s Pray:
Dear God, thank You for making trees to teach us about You. Help me to be like a tree planted by the water — growing strong, staying connected to You, and sharing good fruit with everyone around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
