Joseph’s Amazing Journey

When bad things happen, God is still working!

🎯 The Big Idea

Joseph’s brothers were mean to him, but God used every hard thing to save a whole nation. God can use hard things for good!

🌈 The Story: Joseph’s Colorful Coat

Joseph was a boy who had eleven brothers. That’s a LOT of brothers! His dad, Jacob, loved him so much that he gave Joseph a special, beautiful, colorful coat. It was the most amazing coat anyone had ever seen.

But Joseph’s brothers were jealous. You know that feeling when your friend gets a new toy and you think, “That’s not fair!”? That’s how they felt — except way worse.

🚫 The Bad Part

One day, Joseph’s brothers did something really, really terrible. They:

  • 👕 Ripped off his beautiful coat
  • 🕳️ Threw him into a deep, dark hole in the ground (called a pit)
  • 💰 Sold him to strangers who took him far away to Egypt
  • 😢 Told their dad that Joseph was dead (a big lie!)

Poor Joseph! He was all alone in a country where he didn’t know anyone. He became a slave. Then someone told lies about him, and he was thrown in jail. Everything seemed terrible.

✨ The Amazing Part

But God was with Joseph the whole time — even in the pit, even in jail! God gave Joseph a special gift: he could understand dreams.

One day, the king of Egypt (called Pharaoh) had a scary dream that nobody could explain. Someone remembered Joseph! They brought him to the king, and Joseph said, “God is telling you that seven good years of food are coming, and then seven bad years where nothing will grow. You need to save food now!”

The king was so amazed that he made Joseph the second most powerful person in all of Egypt! Joseph went from a pit to a palace!

📖 Bible Verse (NLT)

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.” — Genesis 50:20

🤗 The Best Part: Forgiveness

When the bad years came and there was no food, guess who came begging for help? Joseph’s brothers! They didn’t even recognize him. But instead of being mean back, Joseph cried happy tears and said, “I’m your brother! Don’t be scared — God used all of this to save everyone!”

Joseph forgave his brothers. He didn’t say, “You were mean, so I’ll be mean back.” He said, “God turned your bad into something good.”

🤔 Think About It!

  1. Has someone ever been mean to you? How did that feel?
  2. Joseph forgave his brothers even though they did something terrible. Is there someone you need to forgive?
  3. When something bad happens, can you think of a time God made something good come out of it?
  4. What’s the difference between getting revenge and forgiving someone?

✨ Activity: The Journey Map

Draw Joseph’s journey like a board game! Start with “Home with Dad”, then draw the pit, Egypt, jail, Pharaoh’s palace, and finally “Forgiving his brothers.” At each spot, write or draw how God was helping Joseph. Show that even the hard parts were part of God’s plan!

🙏 Let’s Pray!

“Dear God, thank You for being with us even when things are hard — like You were with Joseph. Help us to trust that You have a plan, even when we can’t see it. And help us to forgive people who hurt us, just like Joseph did. Amen.”

Memory Verse

“God intended it all for good.”

Genesis 50:20 (NLT)
