Sin and Salvation

What Adam broke, Jesus fixed — but what exactly broke?

🎯 The Big Idea

Adam’s sin didn’t make us automatically guilty — it made us mortal and gave us a broken world. Jesus came to give us life and make us right with God.

💬 Real Talk: Are Babies Born Guilty?

Here’s a question that might surprise you: When a baby is born, is that baby already guilty of sin? Some people say yes — that Adam’s guilt got passed down like a family disease. But let’s look at what the Bible actually says.

📖 Key Verse (ESV)

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.” — Romans 5:12

Notice what Paul says carefully: death spread to everyone. He doesn’t say “guilt spread to everyone.” Think of it like this:

🎮 Modern Example: The Broken Game Console

Imagine your older brother drops the family’s game console and cracks the screen. Now everyone in the house has to deal with a cracked screen — but that doesn’t mean everyone is guilty of dropping it. You’re not in trouble for what your brother did, but you’re definitely affected by it. That’s kind of what Adam did. He broke something, and the whole human race has been living with the cracks ever since.

🔍 What Adam Passed Down

According to the Bible, Adam passed down three things:

💀 Mortality

We all die. Our bodies wear out. That wasn’t God’s original plan.

🌊 A Broken World

Natural disasters, sickness, unfairness — the world isn’t working the way God designed it.

🧢 A Tendency to Sin

We all have a pull toward selfishness. You know that voice that says “take the shortcut” or “it’s fine, no one will know”?

❤️ What Jesus Did About It

Paul sets up a comparison in Romans 5 that’s really powerful:

Adam

One act of disobedience brought death and brokenness to the world

Jesus

One act of obedience brought grace, forgiveness, and eternal life

📖 Key Verse (ESV)

“For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.” — Romans 5:19

💡 Word to Know: Grace

Grace means getting something good that you didn’t earn. It’s the opposite of getting what you deserve. Like if you forgot to do your chores but your mom still took you out for ice cream — that’s grace. God’s grace through Jesus is way bigger than that. Even though we live in Adam’s broken world and we’ve all messed up ourselves, God offers us forgiveness and new life as a gift.

🤔 Discussion Questions

  1. What’s the difference between inheriting guilt and inheriting consequences? Can you think of a real-life example?
  2. Why is it important that babies are not born guilty? What does that tell us about God’s character?
  3. If Jesus’ gift of grace is way bigger than Adam’s mess, what does that mean for your life today?
  4. When you mess up, do you feel like God is angry at you or reaching out to help you? What does Romans 5 say?

🙏 Prayer

“God, thank You that Your grace is bigger than any sin. Thank You that Jesus didn’t just fix what Adam broke — He made it possible for us to be part of Your family forever. Help me to live in that grace every day and share it with others. Amen.”

Memory Verse

“By the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.”

Romans 5:19 (ESV)
