Imagine This...
Picture a mama bird sitting on her nest at night. A big storm is coming! The wind is blowing. Rain is falling. But that mama bird does not fly away. She spreads her wings out wide — as far as they can go — and covers her babies. The storm passes right over, but her babies are warm and safe underneath her wings.
Did you know that is exactly what God did on the very first Passover night? He did not walk past the houses. He stood right at the door, like that mama bird, with His wings spread wide to keep His people safe!
Section 1 — What Is Passover?
A long, long time ago, God's people — the Israelites — were stuck in Egypt. A mean king called Pharaoh made them work very hard and would not let them leave. God told Moses: "I am going to rescue my people!"
God told every family to put lamb's blood on their door. That was like painting a special sign that said: "God's family lives here!" That night, something scary called the Destroyer went through Egypt. But everywhere God saw the blood on a door, He stood right there and kept everyone inside safe.
"The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are. When I see the blood, I will protect you."
— Exodus 12:13 (NLT, simplified)
Section 2 — God Is Like a Mama Bird
Most people think "Passover" means God walked past the houses. But the real word in the Bible is:
Say it: "PEH-sahkh"
It means: "to hover over and protect" — like a bird!
There is another verse in the Bible that helps us understand. It says God protects His people just like birds flying over their babies:
"Like birds flying over their nests, the LORD will protect Jerusalem. He will protect it and save it."
— Isaiah 31:5 (NLT, simplified)
See? The same word! God is like a mama bird who flies over her babies and spreads her wings to keep them safe. That is what Passover really means!
Section 3 — God Stood Guard
So on that special night in Egypt, here is what really happened:
The family put blood
on their door
God saw the blood
and came close
God spread His wings
over the house
The Destroyer could
NOT get in!
God did not pass by like someone walking down the street. God came right to the door and stood there like a guard! He blocked the Destroyer from getting inside. No one could get past God!
God did not pass over. God stood guard!
Section 4 — Jesus Protects Us
Do you know who is our Passover today? Jesus!
"For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been offered up for us."
— 1 Corinthians 5:7 (NLT, simplified)
Just like God protected His people in Egypt with the lamb's blood on the door, Jesus protects us today! When we trust in Jesus, it is like having God spread His wings over us. He keeps us safe. He watches over us. He never leaves.
The next time you feel scared or alone, remember: Jesus is not far away. He is right there, standing guard, wings spread wide, keeping you safe — just like that mama bird!
Activity Time: Draw It!
Get your crayons and paper! Draw a picture of God protecting a house in Egypt. Here are some ideas:
- Draw a house with a door. Put red marks on the doorframe (that is the blood!).
- Draw God above the house with big, spread-out wings like a bird.
- Draw the Destroyer outside — he cannot get in!
- Draw the family inside the house, safe and happy.
On the back of your picture, write (or have a grown-up help you write): "God stood guard for me!"
Memory Verse
"Like birds flying over their nests, the LORD will protect Jerusalem. He will protect it and save it."
— Isaiah 31:5 (NLT, simplified)
